Resilience & Wellbeing Coaching for Kids and Teens

About Me

Hi- I am Hilda, a Glasgow based Resilience and Wellbeing coach. Thanks for your interest in Team Happy!

How I got started

For 3 years I looked at the Ollie and his Superpowers coaching course in Psychologies Magazine and convinced myself I surely couldn't be a coach. When people close to me had a difficult time during the pandemic, I wanted to do more and Ollie came to mind again. I was also mentoring a young person in secondary school at the time and didn't know how best to help her find her way in life.

Why I became an Ollie Coach

I finished the course in 2024 and loved it. I am curious about people and enjoy helping them gain insights, discover different perspectives and taking control of their emotions. Rather than tackling behaviours, the Ollie programme works to find out the root cause of the problem, and that makes it so effective. It is refreshing and different but not floaty or strange! I am a logical, organized person who enjoys making sense of things; I often say to my young clients that we are detectives together, we uncover what is blocking their path so we can remove the obstacle together.

Ollie and his Superpowers

Resilience & Wellbeing Therapy designed for Kids and Teens

What is the Ollie Program?

I trained as an ‘Ollie coach’. Ollie and his Superpowers Website tells you a lot more about the programme and its successes in coaching children, teenagers and adults. Ali Knowles founded the programme aimed specifically at children and teens, as most therapy models are designed for adults. The Ollie programme uses elements of many different types of therapy such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Training), Gestalt Therapy, parts therapy and Timeline Therapy. There is an Ollie version of each of these- specifically designed for kids.

How Ollie Works

The average number of sessions is 5-7 per person; this is less than traditional therapy because we look for the root emotion such as sadness, anger or frustration. Once I know what is causing the unwanted emotions and behaviours, we explore tools and techniques to build resilience and ways of taking control of emotions. This often leads to immediate changes in how children and young people approach life’s daily challenges.

Differences

Ollie coaches work with the client’s experience and their model of the world. So it actually doesn’t matter what the issue is, I find out how the child or young person experiences the world around them, and work with them in creative ways to change their perspective on their issues, and give them tools to take with them to use the very next day. For example we put together a team of emotions they need for a particular situation, we give them names and draw them. That way we can make them smaller and bigger. For young people the same applies, but I use a version appropriate to their age (I have a 14-year old son who knows all about this!)

Why choose an Ollie coach?

  • The number of coaching sessions is lower than more traditional methods (average 5-7 sessions).
  • I make it fun and engaging and really encourage kids to find their own solutions.
  • Ollie and his Superpowers works for long term wellbeing and resilience; I give kids the tools so they can help themselves rather than relying on more therapy. And I (or your child) teach you the methods too.
  • All Ollie coaches are under supervision; we meet at least 30 minutes a month with an experienced, qualified Ollie coach to discuss the best way forward with clients.
  • Safeguarding is vital, and we have direct contact with the Safeguarding Officer at Ollie and his Superpowers. I have a valid Disclosure Scotland certificate, a certificate in NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) and of course my Ollie and his Superpowers certification.

What can I help with?

I can help your child or young person with:

Anxiety

Anger

Behavioural problems

Friendship issues

Fears and phobias

Feeling ‘stuck’

Negative thinking or self-belief

Low confidence

And so much more
If the list doesn’t include the issue you are looking for, do get in touch too. The tools and techniques, and simply having someone to share worries with apply to all children.

Feedback

Mum of "A" aged 11

‘A was angry often at home when asked to help around the house and at football. Hilda took her time to get to know A better, and really understand what was going on for him. Some of the techniques were great and we are still using them now. She taught us as parents to use them too, and they are helping me in every day life- knowing that every emotion is just a part of you, it isn’t the whole you, is such a helpful insight!’

Dad of "M" aged 9

Hilda was brilliant with M, she has a natural instinct with children and M looked forward to the sessions with her. The coaching has resulted in M being less anxious around some of the kids in school- she feels she has control over her responses and her Team of Superpowers is there to help.’

Mum of "R" aged 13

‘R found it hard to talk to us about his angry feelings, but opened up to Hilda from the first session; it is useful for the coach to be an independent person. Hilda took her time, involving us at the end of each session and R’s angry outbursts are much improved now. The school have also told me he has matured greatly and I think this is a lot to do with understanding his behaviour.’

Practical Information

How does it work in practice?

FREE Intro Chat

I offer a free first session where we can discuss the issue you would like me to work and I can meet your child/young person. I explain how the sessions work and give you some examples of my approach.

Sessions

We can agree on what days and times suit you and your child best for our sessions. I work alongside Ollie so these are likely to be late afternoon/evenings or weekends. Sessions can be done online or in-person at a location that works for you.

Timing

10-14 days is a useful amount of time between sessions. As most therapy happens between sessions, what we discuss will start to sink in, things will become clearer and your child may start to use some of the tools.

Cost

The charge is £65 per session. Sessions are around 1 hour and often include a debrief or involvement from parents/carers/guardians if the child agrees to share what we are working on.

Age

The Ollie programme’s tools can be used for children, teenagers and adults. Only the language changes, the rest stays the same. Typically children of 6 years and above understand the basic principles of the Ollie programme and we can work together. We work with the kids’ superpowers (emotions) and for teenagers we work with ‘parts’. The most important thing is that your child or young person is happy to work with me. We discuss this in our introduction.

Safeguarding

Ollie coaches are not trained to deal with clients in need of more serious interventions. I will be honest with you if I am not qualified to deal with the issue presented, or feel in any other way that I can’t provide your child with the best coaching experience.

Next Steps!

The process for getting started is simple

1. Initial Call

I plan an initial call (free of charge) to chat about the issue(s) you want the coaching to address. If we decide to go ahead with the first session I will tell your child that I have spoken with you but won’t discuss anything in detail about what you have shared- it is most important for me to understand your child’s model of the world and how they view the situation

2. Paperwork

I will send over some paperwork to sign and policies to be aware of (contract for working with a minor and privacy policy)

3. Questionnaire

A short list of questions to complete with your child (or your young person can complete it on their own) to help me prepare e.g. their favourite meal, TV programmes, video games and hobbies.

4. Short Video

I will send you a short video for your child to watch just to introduce myself to them

5. Session Details

We agree time and date of the first session with your child and whether it will be online or in-person.

6. Staying in Touch

We stay in touch on progress until I feel we have reached the ‘solution state’- the goal we agreed to at the start.
